Raised Vegetable Gardens

Planning a layout for raised beds and trellises

Raised beds located in an area convenient to your cooking space can provide beauty and healthy eating all in your own back yard. In the Sacramento area we are blessed with ability to grow fresh, tasty fruits and vegetables all year long. Elevated beds allow easy gardening even in the poorest of soils and trellises make growing and harvesting fun for the whole family. Be sure the area receives at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.

Bring in Beneficial Insects

Adding herbs and certain ornamental plants will add interest and bring beneficial insects to your yard. Alyssum, yarrow, marigold and cosmos are good flower choices and herbs that are also edible are parsley, dill and thyme.

Apply fertilizer regularly

Regular application of fertilizer is important. There are very good organic fertilizers available at local nurseries that are formulated specifically for different plants needs.

Harvest Time

Remember to continue reaping the bounty of your work. Regular picking and cutting back keeps plants producing to the fullest.
